So what am I referring to when I talk about color in public speaking or the creation of a video for your business or a webinar you are holding? Color refers to the emotion or the vitality expressed in the vocal variety of your voice as well as in your facial expression and body language. Having no color is monotonous. Having too much color, on the other hand, is something that will turn your audience off.

There is a woman who markets herself as one who teaches others how to use video for their websites. She has made numerous videos about her topic which are found on popular video websites. What is unfortunate about her delivery is that she displays so much emotion in her voice and facial expression, she sounds silly. I have met this woman personally and found her to be less than colorful in conversation which is why I was so surprised when I later viewed her videos.

Being overly expressive is akin to acting; it is a performance. Videoing yourself for your business website should not be a performance: it should be you speaking to the camera just as if you were talking to your colleagues or prospective clients.

So where do we draw the line when it comes to color? I want you to ‘straddle the fence.’ Not too much nor too little. And, the best way to gauge the amount of color you express is to video-record yourself in a practice session. Study the playback. Listen to your voice. Do you express enough emotion, too much emotion, or is it just right? Most people will find that the amount of expression they exhibit is either too little or the right amount. It is not as common to find those who speak with too much color.

If you do indeed fall into the latter group, I suggest that you record yourself in a normal conversation. You may feel uncomfortable at first, but after a minute or two, you will forget the camera is on. When you are finished, watch the video. Chances are good that you will see that you are probably using good facial expression, body language and vocal variety. If this is the case, then practice your material, whether it is for the purposes of public speaking, webinars, or business videos, just as if you were having a conversation in your living room.

One man with whom I worked thought it would not sound natural if he delivered his presentation as if he were talking to his wife. However, when he later watched the video of himself, he was amazed at just how ‘normal’ he sounded. Not over the fence nor under it.

When it comes to expressive speaking, straddling the fence should be your goal. Don’t frighten prospective clients away with so much emotion that it sounds fake or phony.

'The Office of the Future': an office where paper has been made a thing of the past. With us since the 1940's, the concept of the 'paperless office' has been around for a long time and still isn't a reality.

Still with inspection, the office of today is a pretty good approximation of the pulp SF style workplace imagined by those in the early 20th century.

For example, consider video conferencing in New York, you're sitting at your desk, discussing affairs with your colleagues in an everyday business meeting - but your colleagues are hundreds if not thousands of miles away. Instead of travelling that distance physically, you simply boot up your webcam, your microphone and your high bandwidth connection and you can discuss things face to face.

In today's world, video conferencing seems like a simple application of technology - but that technology was impossible just thirty years ago. Imagine being from the 1940's; you'd have a heart attack, or at least need a stiff whisky and a cigarette. Although given that your average 1940's businessman could have done both at his desk, there'd still be a few more shocks in store for our erstwhile time-traveller.

Anyway, however you look at it, you can't argue that we haven't quite made it to the prophesied 'paperless office'. Still, although it's not a 'paperless' office, it's definitely an office with less paper.

Every email that you send would once have been a typed letter (or at least a telegraph); every database would have been a filing cabinet (maybe a whole room of filing cabinets); every rough draft would have to be entirely written again on a whole new set of pages (and no spellchecker).

Something to keep in mind the next time you forget to press 'save' and your PC crashes or you can't open a .zip file...
